Because sometimes we just need someone to be there...
A few years ago I was experiencing some life transitions and a friend shared with me a question that I embraced and continue to "answer."
"What
Would You Attempt To Do;
If You Knew You Could Not Fail?"
(Author
unknown)
Like many of you I have a mortgage, bills, a kid two years from college and life's usual responsibilities. As I thought about the second half of my life I felt compelled to explore the above question and be remain open to new possibilities and opportunities.
Specifically...
- How did I want to live the rest of my life?
- What attitudes would I need to shift?
- What priorities would I need to change?
- Most importantly, how could I "ponder" these questions and still take care of my responsibilities?
I know that many of you are experiencing these same thoughts, questions, and challenges. I believe that the counseling relationship can create a safe, productive environment for you to search for your own answers.
My Counseling Philosophy & Values
I believe that most individuals experience a time in their lives when they can benefit from working with a trained counselor. Individuals may come to counseling as a result of a significant loss, family stress, "normal" life transitions, or many other reasons. I believe that individuals are inherently capable, caring, and seeking social connection. The relationship between a counselor and their therapist allows people an opportunity to work through barriers and concerns that are stopping them from enjoying their lives.
I use an eclectic approach to counseling drawing on my training in:
- Developmental Counseling
Whether we are an infant or an elder, we are all moving through developmental stages. As a therapist it is important that I understand these stages and also realize when an individual is "stuck" at a stage that may be causing them problems. - Solution Focused Therapy
There are times when an individual comes to therapy with a specific issue or concern. A strong component of Solution Focused therapy is the development of problem solving skills. - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy There are times when individuals thought patterns (cognitive) are not congurent with their behavior. For example, the meaning we may put to our behaviors and/or the behaviors of another are not reasonable, rational and/or healthy.
- Person Centered Therapy The theraputic relationship must be based on respect, honesty, and the active participation of the client and the counselor.
