Scope of Practice

As a general practitioner I see lesbian individuals and couple with a wide range of concerns who come from all walks of life. I believe that cultural competence is essential to my work and I have experience working with people from a variety of ethnicities and cultures as well as sexual minorities. I work with people with a broad range of concerns such as issues with mood problems, life transitions, sexual trauma, intimacy issues, relationship concerns, chemical and behavioral addiction, co-dependency, and family of origin concerns. My main theoretical influences are Existentialism, Rogerian, and Cognitive Behavioral theory with an underlying focus on empowerment. While Existentialism is primarily intrapersonal and focuses on the individual, anything of our past that has not been dealt with will show up as symptoms in the present and can also affect the future. My therapy beliefs consider any and all relationships crucial when considering treatment. In this regard, I find that the people I work with benefit from looking at the generational patterns in their families and cultural influences that affect their lives as well as their current circumstances.

Range of Focus

  • Abuse - Emotional, Sexual, Physical
  • Family of Origin Issues
  • Multicultural Issues
  • Parenting
  • Relationship Issues
  • Sexual Orientation (Incl. Gay / Lesbian / Coming Out) Issues
  • Communication / Relationship / Social Skills Issues
  • Mood (Incl. Bipolar / Unipolar, Manic Depressive) Disorders
  • Non Western European Cultural Groups / Individuals

Values and Philosophy

I provide a safe, empathic and genuine atmosphere in order to create a connection in the therapeutic relationship. Within this work I strive to help people find their individual path that will promote growth, wellness, and peace of mind. I am experienced in working with people from a variety of cultures and ethnicities and believe that these influences affect the lens through which we view the world as well as the way we interact with the world around us. I also focus on issues relevant to women and other minority populations and encourage individuals to build their sense of empowerment in relationship to themselves and the people and institutions they come into contact with on a daily basis.

Therapeutic Technique and Methodology

As your therapist, I would help you to set goals that you feel will be helpful to you and set a time frame for those goals that you feel is achievable in order to make real and measurable progress in our work together. I see therapy as a tool to help you identify and learn about the once helpful ways in which you have learned to cope with challenging life circumstances, assess whether those coping mechanisms are still valuable, and develop insight into the ways you can change and acquire new ways of coping, behaving, and thinking that are more satisfying and life affirming.

I believe that everybody has a natural ability for self-awareness and to enhance the quality of their lives and interactions with others. The process of developing and becoming true to ourselves happens in relation to "being in the world" and can be understood in the context of everything around us. This includes the social, psychological, ecological, as well as the mind/body/spirit connection. People can suffer when they are not in tune with the basics of emotional well being. As your therapist I will help you take into consideration all pertinent aspects of your life, examples include generational influences, disabilities, religion/spirituality, sexuality, race and ethnicity, culture, nation of origin, etc. We all need to have connection with others, such as having meaning in life, striving for all that life has to offer, and obtaining freedom through taking responsibility for our own choices.
